There are many Oak tree species in Turkish flora. But from these species Quercus macrolepis fruits has technical and commercial importance for leather industry. Acorn cups and beards of Quercus macrolepis fruits are rich in tannin.

The tannin obtained from Quercus macrolepis known as valonea or valonia. Considering Valonea’s chemical structure, it belongs to ellagitannin subgroup of  hydrolysable (pyrogallol) tannins.
